The sky over Berlin before the builders came

Shot on 35mm film, The Sky Over Berlin Before the Builders Came traces open skies across Alexanderplatz on my daily commute, capturing a city poised for another reinvention under the influx of global capital. The monetisation of the skies, following recent changes to the building regulations, signals a vertical transformation for the city.

A three-framed Super8 scan of the sky questions the degree to which memories of a place are accurate.

The hand-stitched book in coptic binding exposes the vertebrae of a city in flux. A red thread runs through the binding, connecting the individual signatures like fragments of memory tied to a disappearing place. Each signature is wrapped in blue paper bearing a different image of the sky, which gradually darkens throughout the sequence.
